Nope, permission is denied on the whole /var/spool/cron/ tree.

[root@flux /root]# ls -l /var/spool/
 [snip]
drwx------    2 root     root           72 Jun 19 19:35 cron
 [snip]

Yeap, the editor does modify a file in the /tmp/ directory.
