Re: [Sheflug] USB

Hi Ian,

Just yesterday I successfully got a USB port going under Mandrake
8.0. My experience was this:

1) Using HardDrake the machine frequently locked up. (I actually had
to power off several times - thank goodness for ReiserFS).

2) Research on the net showed me the exact USB module I needed for my
USB device (it was se401, as it happens). I downloaded & compiled it,
then gzipped it and put it somewhere logical like
/lib/modules/2.4.3-20mdk/kernel/drivers/usb/ (I think that's where
it's meant to live). I gzipped it because all of the other modules
were gzipped - but I don't think you have to do this).

3) At the shell I used rmmod to remove every module that I judged to
be relevant (using output from lsmod) then I used insmod to add all
of the relevant modules in the appropriate order (i.e. the modules
that don't depend on other modules first).

4) Much random experimentation seemed to suggest that the one that
seemed to be causing the hang-ups was usb-uhci. Not sure whether
this'll be a problem with your system.

5) Once everything was insmodded (including usb-uhci) my webcam
worked. When I shutdown and rebooted, much to my surprise everything
seemed to be in place and working. I guess Mandrake must have
preserved the state of the machine. I was just getting ready to try
some messy hacks to sort out the startup order, but I didn't have to!

Hope this helps.

James
