In general /proc subdirectories appear spontaneously when you do 
other stuff right...

Personally, I've had great results under Mandrake 8.0 except this 
slight glitch with Compaqs - but the ports are on the motherboard and 
Compaq are notorious for their proprietary hardware solutions. With a 
regular PCI USB card I've had no problems.

I haven't tried SuSE on the Compaqs - but we could - we have some 
spares for experimentation! How about installing one with SuSE to 
test 'em head-to-head? If I can make it I'll bring one along to the 
next meeting (which will be a first for me - I haven't been avoiding 
you all, I've just been busy on those days!)

Uh oh... I can feel a "my distro's better than yours" debate approaching... ;-)
