[Sheflug] apache root directory

here's a fairly simple problem im sure someone can help me with; im trying
to test out my website locally as it includes php3 / perl kinda stuff so id
like to see if that stuff works... anyhew i put the stuff in mmy public
html directory, and now i find out that the root direct to apache is
somehting completely different like in usr/local or somehting i dont have
write access to as a user. how can i change it to be my public_html
directory? ive tried running commanche - it asks where all the files are
stored but only lets me choose the top option which specifies /sbin/ -
hwoever theres no way i can get commanche configured since the exectuable
for apache and everyting is in a directory it doesnt like (it automatically
looks for it in /bin/ and mine is in /sbin somehwere..). theres a couple
more option that let you say what distribution you have apache installed
with, but those are greyed out for me for some reason... so bascially i
cant use commanche to configure it..

so, with that in mind, does anyone know how i configure it manually? i dont
like editing files but im guessing im gonna have to aren't i?

thanks.. james.
