SGI's are nice, and IRIX (not IRIS :) isn't a bad UNIX, but like all
UNIXes, they have quirks you have to get used to. A friend is currently
trying to get hold of IRIX base install CD's, as his installation's gone up
the spout. SGI will charge an arm and a leg for the CD's (the base set is
11 CD's or thereabouts. If you get a pack with 3 CD's or so in it, then
you've only got an update so can't do a reinstall on a fresh system), so if
you need them, your best bet is demand they come with the workstation.
Failing that, Ebay is your next choice unless you know a friend who can
source them.

I've got a DEC Alpha sitting by my desk, awaiting me to source Digital
UNIX. Thankfully, Compaq "only" charge 75 quid for the media (and anout 70
odd quid for the license, but I can cope with that). I've heard reports
that IRIX CD's can be 300 quid up, even for old versions (scouting around
on the SGI newsgroups).

If you can get hold a base installation CD's for IRIX 5.x or 6.x, I'd be
interested to know :)
