IRIX, not IRIS :-) It's SGI's version of UNIX. There is a linux
port to SGI boxen, but I just don't know it's state or anything. There's
a debian port for the MIPS platform (which includes the Indy) on
http://www.uk.debian.org/ports/mips. Maybe have a look around mailing
lists and all that...

Only seen these boxen in the distance, but if you have a guest
account and no root, you can always try to see whether /etc/passwd is
not shadowed and try to crack that. Other than that, ask in USENET. SGI
groups are full of old hands in the SGI arena, and bound to come up with
some information (linux groups are a waste of time).

You might be able to install IRIX through a network connections.
Again, check usenet (comp.sys.sgi.*).

That's easily done. Paranoids among us will probably shriek at
someone using a firewall/gateway as a general purpose box, but that's
how life goes. It's pretty easy to do, you enable firewalling and then
the IP masquerading stuff. They are both orthogonal things, so you can
have one, both or none running simultaneously. Check the HOWTOs. Or look
in the web for sample configs (that's how i learnt).
