IRIX. It's a proprietary UNIX from SGI.

Not really, I've played with them before but never owned one. Indys are MIPS 
based so you need a MIPS based Linux to put on it. I think Debian do a MIPS 
distro, and should have boot disks (dunno what the actual floppy drives are 
like internally, hopefully PC compatible).

I would recommend leaving IRIX on there though. TBH the best thing about 
Indys is the decent graphics card (well behind most gamer cards now though) 
and the big monitor. How well Linux/XFree will cope with it is another matter.
