You might or you might not. I don't know what an indycam is :-)

You can get the GUI/Desktop b*ll*cks by getting GNOME or KDE for
Irix, either from tarball+compile+... or by getting the pre-compiled
binaries (if these exist). I would have thought that Ximian would have
ximian gnome available, but you can always ./configure make and all the
rest of it (might take over 5 days to compile it, but :-D)

Depends on what you use it for. But I presume that the X server
bundled with IRIX is probably optimised for the gfx card it carries.
Also, SGI's compiler is bound to be "better" than gcc-MIPS.

Why don't you just stick with IRIX then? You can probably get
gcc and all the gnu bits and bobs installed, and then compile all your
favourite linux software. You have the source use it. I do use gcc on
the university's Sun cluster. Remember that most UN*X software is
thought to be portable.

3D rendering is a good idea. POVRay is fairly easy to use (or
blender). I do have a number of datasets you could visualise for me and
produce output as en EPS :-)))

Think again, that whatever you can do with Linux you're bound to
be able do do with IRIX. It means re-compilng or trawling the net to
find the binaries and stuff (yeah, we're lazy, so what?).
