[Sheflug] SGI Linux
Okay tis a shame about my other SGI station, has got a faulty power
supply and isnt quite as good as the one sittin next to me. Have got
Irix 6.2 running (off the latest base install disks). Would like ideas
on what I can do with it tho.
Also, im getting a bit bored of Irix as i dont really know how to use
it and it doesnt have many program i can make any use of...
Soooo, would like to change it over to linux/debian, but have a few
questions for anyone in the know:
(1) if i switch to linux, can i still use my indycam?! its cool....
(2) do i get a gui , preferably KDE?
(3) how fast is it likely to be? ie will linux run slower than irix?
(4) does anyone actually have any experience of getting linux on one
these things? if it was a case of "shove cd in, KDE comes up in half
hour.." then id be fine, but it seems as though you have to configure
it so much and get xfree working etc, i just dont know how to do it.
is there a bootable iso image i can download?! oh , why doesnt suse do
mips machines. dammit.
(5) if i cant switch it over to linux, what can i do with it? i could
use it to make little movies and save them to a network drive if i
could figure out how :) or possibly burn cds? no idea.
thanks guys, sorry to be an arse about this whole silicon graphics
machines things, but its such a cute little box i want it to do
*somehting* apart from stare it me
