As the link can only transmit characters below 7 bits you need some way of 
escaping any characters above 7 bits.

Kermit and Y Modem are two such beasts. kermit is available for most distros 
although ISTR it has a funny license. lrzsz does ymodem, as does minicom. Not 
sure which is best as I haven't used either extensively.
