I had a Compaq laptop last year that arrived from Sterling Management 
Systems without the utilities partition in it.  I installed it and 
booted from /boot.  Worked fine.  Change that in Lilo config under 
YaST.  That was without the Compaq stuff on a hidden partition.  
Couldn't find anyone to help me out.

Oh .... that's a bit unusual.  You must be suffering from the kind of 
one off that I get most days :))
