Depends on what you want to do. If you want to learn sql, then go with one
of the big database engines that other people have mentioned.
If you just want a dbase clone, then I don't think there is anything. If you
are interested in using dbase style development, then there is the
Harbour-project (http://www.habour-project.org/) They are re-writing the
Clipper language. They are very far along already, and the language is
usable. It is cross-platform, so it runs on Dos, Win, Linux, OS/2 & BeOS.
Incase you don't know. CA-Clipper started life as a compiler for DBase, but
has grown to be alot more. Harbour is an implementation of the language
(Clipper) using open source.
I've used it, and once you can get the thing to compile, its good.
