Forget /usr - everything in there should come off of the distro disks
when you reinstall (in theory).

If there are any specific directories you've created in /usr - get
those tho.

/home, possibly /etc and at the outside /usr/local/ are the ones I'd
be looking at.

Nope. No matter how clever the filesystem, it can't really help once the
hardware is borked.
