[Sheflug] Modem cutting out

2.2.14 bad. Very bad. Security holes in there somewhere.
Anyway, back on topic, try
tail -f /var/log/messages
whilst you're connecting and online, and see if there is anything
interesting in the logs.
I seem to remember I had modem hassles many moons back - also with
Redhat 6 (and not being very good at setting up ppp manually :-)
Also, I'm not a great fan of wvdial - especially the older versions -
try using ifup ppp0 and ifdown ppp0 (might have to be as root) until
you know that's not the problem.
