You DO NOT need supplementary software unless you are using unusual 
hardware.

Can you ping the two machines with each other ?  If not then your 
network settings are not correct or you just haven't got the right 
cards.

When you say combo card what do you mean ?  I use the Maplin Realtek 
8139C cards which are cheap and work first time.  Of course....  
anyone else on this list will tell you otherwise but I've found that 
to be impractical advice through practical experience.
