I'm getting an IBM Thinkpad a22p with a memory upgrade to 512Mb. A
colleague of mine has just installed SuSE 7.2 on his with some minor
tweaks (getting the display to work) and it seems fine (and looks great).

Well I don't mind, especially as I'm getting one :-) Mind you, I should be wary of IBM because my disk crash

(which I am still recovering from) was on the now infamous IBM Deskstar 75GXP disk. For the one or two of you on this list

not aware of this, there is a class action suit against IBM going on in
the States over the drive, which is claimed to be
inherently unreliable. The shop took it in but wouldn't return it to
IBM; it has been "repaired" using a software utility. I now
confidently expect further crashes and am trying to join the class
action suit.

Thanks a lot. I'm planning to install SuSE 7.3. Hope it is more
painless than some of the experiences I've had with installing Linux.
But I'm almost certain to need help.

Matt.
