[Sheflug] dual booting

Hiya,

thanks to all of you who replied to my questions about backups. I'm now
a lot nearer understanding how to do what I want. I now have my old hdd
back and can use that for backups too, which is handy.

I've a question now about dual booting:

it should I believe be possible to get lilo to have a boot option of
booting off a
different drive to the one lilo is installed on? Because I now have
win98 and win2k on a 2nd drive (supposedly "repaired" with a software
utility).

I have hde = Maxtor 60GB as master on IDE3 (HPT370), hdf = IBM Deskstar
as slave on IDE3.
Partitions on hdf are a 2G active primary partition with win98, 3G
logical partition with win2k. Can see both partitions under both
windows/dos and linux.

/etc/lilo.conf has

boot
= /dev/hde
vga
= 771
lba32
read-only
menu-scheme = Wg:kw:Wg:Wg
prompt
timeout
= 80
message
= /boot/message

# a lot more boot options not relevant to this question

# DOS (win98/win2k) bootable partition
   other  = /dev/hdf1
   label  = dos
   loader = /boot/chain.b # is this right? I only have old SuSE
documentation to go on.
     map-drive = 0x80  # first hd:  BIOS number 0x80
     to        = 0x81  # second hd: BIOS number 0x81
     map-drive = 0x81
     to        = 0x80
   table  = /dev/hdf
# DOS bootable partition config ends

the map-drive lines seem to be essential, without them I just get a message
No NTLDR
and have to reboot.

BUT: I get a choice of win98 and win2k as per boot of hdf directly and
then if I choose win2k it starts to boot and then I get a STOP BSOD. I
won't soil you with the error messages (maybe off-list?!)

I suppose a work-around would be to have a dos bootloader that loads
lilo but this doesn't seem as elegant and I fear something will go wrong
anyway.

Anyone have experience with this kind of set up?

cheers,

Matt.
