Have you actually got an ethernet network?
I'm going to assume not.
See /etc/rcN.d where N is a runlevel for servers/daemons.
The items in these directories are links to the scripts in
/etc/init.d/ which control services.
I'm guessing that your system is attempting to bring up eth0, which
either does not exist or is not configured correctly.
My guess is that you've got eth0 configured, but no hardware to go
with it, or the wrong modules/kernel setup.
On my system /etc/init.d/network looks for all configured networks and
attempts to bring them up at boot - might be worthwhile seeing what
your system does, and rooting around in /etc/sysconfig/network
My /etc/sysconfig/network contains the line
NETWORKING=yes
If your system has a similar setup, set NETWORKING to no.
Try that. If not, it shouldn't break too many things :-)
HTH.
