Bad lilo.conf ... check /etc/lilo.conf ... this is if you can get back in :) 
In the mean time if you can't, you can boot Linux with the right root 
partition at the LILO: prompt. Now I've no idea what label your kernel has, 
so for the time being I'm going to assume it is called (and to ensure there's 
no confusion) "fish".

So when you see the LILO: prompt, type: "fish root=/dev/hda1", remembering to 
replace /dev/hda1 with the partition your root resides.

If you don't know the label of the kernel (the label is defined in 
lilo.conf), then at the LILO: prompt, press <TAB>, which will show a list of 
all labels defined in lilo.conf.
