No, I've not downloaded the update for the kernel. I was going to do a kernal
update from scratch. i.e. make menuconfig, make dep, clean, bzImage etc. When
I tried using the update agent for downloading the kernal, it does it all for
you? but found that it didn't do the modules, so end up when rebooting,
modules dependency error or similar. Any ideas how/what to do if using the
update agent?
I seems that the module autoloader has kicked in and autoloaded
ide-scsi, and the automounter now works. I wouldn't complain!

Reinstalled RH7.2. Taking note of some of your replies I get the following.
ls -l /dev/cdrom* this gives /dev/cdrom -> /dev/scd0
and /dev/cdrom1 -> /dev/scd1
fstab lists /dev/cdrom & cdrom1 as /mnt/cdrom & cdrom1. /dev/cdrom is a
standard ide cdrom and yet fstab lists it as scd0 and not hdb as I would

Now here is the confusing bit. Perhaps the email subject should be renamed
"WHAT'S GOING ON" Since my last email, I must have rebooted into Linux 3 or
4 times, switching off for a while or rebooting into windows etc. Each time I
booted into Linux, I tried mounting the cdrom drives. Now I find, that
