    It seems you have installed muLinux on a FAT partition. You can very 
much install it on an ext2 partition, which shouldn't be a problem when 
changing the password for root. You can change the password by hand by 
editing the relevant files (/etc/passwd and /etc/shadow, if memory serves).

    Not to question your wisdom, might and wit :-), why don't you just 
disable telnet? Our server has been on for ages, and whenever it's been 
down, all you need is a keyboard and a monitor to debug it. Caveat, I 
can't remember how to disable telnet in the newer mulinux, but it's just 
a case of choosing the right option, I guess...
