yes, that's what I meant. Let's call it the "Tux console" for lack of a
better phrase.

yes, I'm on 2.4 series (2.4.4 which was distributed with SuSE7.2)
because of software compatibility problems with SuSE7.3.

ah. yes, I tried that, but with the other kernel options I've got my
screen locks up (think it is a graphics-related problem) on boot and so
I disabled it. Not even the "magic" SysRq keys help when this
happens. There is a problem with the IBM tft displays under 7.2 which
may be related to this. But it is possible to have both X and Tux
console as the shipped kernel gives a TuX console and works out of the
box after the X problem has been sorted. It is odd as I couldn't find
the documentation I remembered for the TuX console when rebuilding a 7.2
kernel when I looked at the framebuffer stuff (if that makes any
sense--I mean that I've been here before and (mis?)remember some xconfig
documentation on the subject but didn't find it under the framebuffer
section this time)

yes, I always do that as I use reiser (in anticipation of having to
power off regularly when rebuilding the kernel)

no, that is fine, thanks.

and the same to you, Baz.

good timing I see :-)
Matt.
