I'm guessing wildly at exactly what you mean by "graphical console".

If you mean a terminal with ol' Tux and fancier fonts, then have a
look under

(Kernel 2.4.17, slightly different for 2.2.x)

Console drivers -> Framebuffer support -> Support for frame buffer
devices (EXPERIMENTAL)

You'll probably need to enable experimental options under

Code maturity level options -> Prompt for development and/or
incomplete code/drivers

If you're talking about finishing the boot process at an X session
with a login prompt for KDE/GNOME/Whatever, then you need to look at
your bootscripts and set the default runlevel in /etc/inittab and
ensure that X and kdm/xdm/etc is started in the level you specify.

Happy New Year!

Baz. (Who is just off to bed... :-)
