[Sheflug] linux device problems...

the following is going to be a little long-winded... i appologise for
this in advance. I can't seem to get anything to work under linux. The
main things I want to get working are the modem, and the ability to
write to the windows partition. If anyone can help with either, I would
be very appreciative. Most of the following is word for word messages,
but as I can only send and receive mail from windows, and as I can not
copy error and other messages directly to the windows partition, I may
have made some mistakes in writing the messages down. I have spent hours
reading help files, and have tried following these instructions, yet I
still fail to get anything working.

First, when I try to save anything in hda2 (the windows partition), I
get a message 'access denied.' I can read files, but not write them. I
am using the root account, and I thought I could do anything I wanted
with root, but it would appear not. Anyway, I did an ls -a for hda2, and
got the following :
drwxr-xr-x 11 root root 8192 Jan1 1970 hda2
I tried to do a 'chmod 777 hda2' and got the message :
hda2 is a read only device.

Next, the modem (again, this is as root) :
when I click on kppp, it loads fine, and shows the btfree account I
configured. I attempt to connect, and I get the message 'initializing
modem...' This lasts for about 20 seconds or so, and then an error
message is displayed : Time out in chat script.
It would help if it would tell me which chat script is being used, but I
can not glean this piece of information from any of the documentation I
have read, though it would seem to be the script :
etc/ppp/starter/links/account1 :
[Account]
Description=btfree
Authentication=PAP
PhoneNumber=08089933001
DNS=194.73.73.94 194.73.73.95
Username=[MyUserName]
Password=[MyPassword]
[Lizzard]
Active=true
PPP=true
Proxy=
Catagory=

(the user name and password fields are filled in appropriately in the
actual script, but otherwise it is an exact copy)

The modem script is :
etc/ppp/starter/modems/modem :
[Modem]
Speed=56000
InitString=ATE0Q0V1S0=0
HardFlowControlString=AT&H1&R2&I0
SoftFlowControlString=AT&H2&I2&R1
[Lizzard]
Model=U.S. Robotics Sportster 56k External Fax
Active=true
FlowCtrl=hard

I read in the help file that this script should be named ttyS0, so just
in case, I also copied the above script, and placed it in the same
directory. i.e. there is now also a
etc/ppp/starter/modems/ttyS0

The only other two scripts I found, that appear to be related to modem
configuration are ppplogin.conf and ppp.chat.to. These are as follows:
etc/ppp/ppplogin.conf :
defaults
    local-ip 10.10.10.1
    change-pasword     allow
    command /usr/sbin/pppd srtscts passive mru 296

user    Pokir
    remote-ip 10.10.10.2

etc/ppp/ppp.chat.to :
TIMEOUT 5
ABORT "NO CARRIER"
ABORT BUSY
ABORT "NO DIALTONE"
ABORT ERROR
"" +++ ATZ
OK AT&F
OK ATX3
OK ATDT0191011
TIMEOUT 60
CONNECT

Thanks for any help you may be able to offer.
Regards,
Damian.
