You're trying to relay through the server, right?

Sendmail will talk to just about anything if you're willing to read up on
it. You could run a local smtp server which relays through your external
smtp server. If all that is too much hassle why not forget the external
smtp server altogether and just run a local server with no relay/smart
host? It's a bit slower if you send lots of messages to multiple
recipients but for normal use you wouldn't notice the difference. Qmail or
Postfix may be worth investigating if you choose this route, although
chances are sendmail is already installed.
