[Sheflug] Scanner Permissions Hell!

Hi All,

We're having scanner aggro down at Access Space. We took the old
scanner server apart (it was an old P90 with loads of problems) and
replaced it with a spanking new (well, new for us) P166.

Fine -- but we can't get XSane to work the way we want it. "Scanner
Access Now Easy" my ar*e. Here are the issues:

# XScanImage calls XSane, and it will only work if you're root.
# Calling XSane via a Gimp plugin will also work - but only if you're root.
# If you're a normal user XScanimage reports "no xsane device available".
# If you're a normal user, the Gimp plugin reports "Cannot access
xsane device".

We know it's "a permissions problem". But which, what? I'd guess it's
not such a great idea to set the SUID bit on gimp or xscanimage -
surely there must be a less radical solution.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Cheers,

James
