I'm _doing the right thing_ and swapping the linux boxes from SSH to
OpenSSH (urg, via telnet on my headless boxes)

It was installed a few years back, when I knew I wanted ssh and it was the
first package I came across. Since then it has just worked & I haven't
messed with it.

I'm building OpenSSL & OpenSSH now, hopefully it will work.

One of the machines has something very loosely resembling Slackware 7 and
the other is built from sources. Neither mess with $XAUTHORITY. The third
is NetBSD/sparc.

thanks for the pointers anyhow. Hopefully OpenSSH will work better.
