Another potential cause; Slack doesn't use PAM, however /etc/login.defs does
set various parameters. I can't remember if Slack 7 defaults to MD5
passwords ... Slack 8 certainly does. So you need to build OpenSSH with
support for MD5 passwords.
As I don't know what your running on other machines, I'm just throwing other
things into the wind here :)
