One of the things I've found helpful when understanding ssh stuff is to
start sshd on the server machine in debug mode and run ssh on the client
machine in verbose mode,
e.g.
sshd -d (on server)
ssh -v server (on client)
it gives quite a good run down of what it is doing, may be this will
help you.
ps. sshd -d wont fork so it will only process one connection.
