Graham,
In case you're still interested, I just got RH 7.2 + Alcatel Speeedtouch
modem + Pipex's Xtreme ASDL service all talking together last night.
(And it goes like brown stuff off a shovel ;-)

I can provide my 'how I did it' notes if anyone's interested.
