[Sheflug] Help, Loading Joystick Modules

I'm sure I'm missing something really fundamental here, but I can't see
it, can somebody help me out ?

I have 2 Micro$oft Side Winder Game Pads and I can load the relevent
joystick modules for them in a root shell no problems by doing the
following

modprobe joydev
modprobe ns558
modprobe sidewinder

This works fine, but I have 2 problems.  

1) the gamepads will only work for any games launched as root in the
same shell that I did the modprobe's in.  If I launch a game outside of
that shell it doesn't detect them at all

2) I'm sure this is related to problem 1, when I reboot, I have to do
the modprobes again, but then again I am trying to use something built
by Micro$oft so maybe I should just give up now :)

Any ideas ?
