[Sheflug] Migrating from ext2 to ext3 on Debian Potato

Hi all,
I guess this has been plastered all over the place before, but I
can't find the whole lot of information. I have a system running
potato, and because of power cuts and plug testing, the system goes
down. Usually, when it re-boots, it asks for the superuser privs to
run fsck, and that is annoying (namely, because I need to carry a
heavy monitor around, and then perch off the filing cabinet where the
computer is. It is also covered with leaves from a near-by plant). So
I thought I'd chuck in ext3 so if it needs to be rebooted, it will go
back up automatically.

Before I do any such thing, I did realise that I only have one
partition (yes, it's a dumb idea, but it goes back a long time, and
there were good reasons for that at that point in time). So, I
understand that ext3 is fully compatible with ext2, and there
shouldn't be any problems, but I might ask again how safe is this.

What I have to do is quite simple:
(i) /sbin/tunefs -j /dev/XXXXX
(ii) Change the ext2 in /etc/fstab to ext3
(iii) Install a ext3-aware kernel
(iv) Reboot
(v) Bite my nails
(vi) Be relieved

However, my doubts creep in when I consider that the root
filesystem will be ext3. Do I need to do something to lilo? Will it be
recognised as ext3 and not ext2? I have compiled a kernel with both
ext2 and ext3 included (not as modules), but still....

    Can anyone enlighten me?

        Cheers,
        José
