I think the problem for many people with UML is they assume it is a process
rather than a notation. UML won't solve your problems, but allying it to
other software engineering techniques it can be very useful. It is also the
most widely spoken dialect to communicate your design ideas.
Far too big though. Eccentric though he may be, I do quite like Tony Simons
approach to UML (http://www.dcs.shef.ac.uk/~ajhs/).
