The behaviour is dependent on the "local delivery agent" - Sendmail
doesn't touch mailboxes, nor know anything about them. To find out what
local mailer you're using:
grep ^Mlocal /etc/mail/sendmail.cf
I'm assuming you're using a recent Sendmail there. There are a bunch of
different local delivery agents, all of which have different capabilities.
Whichever one's on your system ought to have documentation as well,
though.
