Not so. One server I have at work has the following entry in my .forward:
"|/etc/smrsh/pegmail -n cjohnson"
[pegmail is a little script I wrote that delivers mail to my pegasus mail
spool]. As far as sendmail is concerned, it can run programs using that
syntax. Yes, you will probably have to put it the line in quotes, as I have
done above. Sendmail may also require the program you want to run to live in
a certain directory (depending on configuration). On this Linux box,
programs for .forward must live, or at least be linked in, /etc/smrsh. This
prevents people executing arbitary programs.
Further, the classical UNIX program "vacation" has always ran out of
.forward :)
