Thanks for the advice and suggestions, chaps!

Sadly, I think the problem's more serious - the BIOS is intermittently
recognising the disc is there, but mostly not. I think the HDD's dying :-(
I've checked the cables and tried moving the drive between Master/Slave
settings and all that.
 
Fortunately, it worked long enough this evening for me to copy all my
workfiles across my network to my trusty Acorn :-)

I suppose I'll have to replace the failing drive. Maybe a really good
opportunity to clear-out the cr*p!

I think I'll relegate the remaining good drive to be the 'Windows' drive and
install a fresh Linux on a nice new 20G+ unit. Any recommendations for
brands/types anyone?
