So far in about 15 minutes of using texmacs I've had 3 complete crashes 
on different actions with all edits being lost; some of these are 
clearly programming errors (such as taking the head of an empty list) 
which isn't shocking but I don't think I can work with that kind of 
error rate.  So I might try Lyx again (only it is even less supportive 
of user-defined macros of which I have many hundreds).

I guess it is carry on with good old emacs/auctex for a while yet.
