Internal ISA PnP modem (was: [Sheflug] Debian/Next Meeting)

Now that you mention it... I got my Woody CDs last week, and was
trying to install it in the computer at home. Mostly, it went OK, but
there is a problem I cannot get the grips with. As usual, it is
related to the internal ISA PnP modem, a SupraExpress 56k.

The modem works fine with Mandrake and BeOS on the same machine.
It is detected by either operating system and assigned IO ports and an
IRQ, and we are all really happy.

Enter Debian and the problems start. First of all, I am using the
2.4 kernel (bf2.4 option on the installer). This has isa-pnp support
(at any rate, I did load the isa-pnp module). I have tried to set the
modem up manually using setserial, with the standard values:
setserial /dev/ttyS2 uart 16550A port 0x03f8 irq 4 spd_vhi skip_test
(or thereabouts). Setserial returns a "LSR Safety check engaged!"
message, which prevents it from changing the settings, hence the modem
doesn't work.

I read that this warning means that the kernel has found a can't
happen state in the modem's UART (it seems to be due to the Supra
card, according to most messages I found, this problem is _fairly_
common with Supra internal modems). However, the skip_test bit should
get rid of the check that triggers the warning/error...

I just haven't got a clue where to look for more stuff. As I said,
the modem works fine with current BIOS parameters on Linux. Any ideas
_much_ welcomed...
