[Sheflug] Loadable Kernel Modules

I'm using SuSe 7.2 Pro and Kernel 2.4.4 Everytime I have install a new
kernel, I cannot get any kernel modules to load automatically, I have to
manually use insmod. I have now returned to 2.4.4 This is the process I used
to upgrade to 2.4.18. I downloaded modutils 2.4.16 used make menuconfig.
( Loadable modules support was set to Y as was kmod) make dep clean bzImage.
Make modules modules_install copied the kernel image from arch/i386/boot to
/boot and ran lilo and copied System.map and made symbolic link to
/usr/src/kernel-2.4.18
The kernel would boot up, new modules were contained in /lib/modules/2.4.18
but sound (which was a module) would only load with insmod emu10k1, etc
(sound card SB Live). What have I not done/done wrong ? All help
appreciated. The SuSe Ref manual mentions initrd..... I have not made an
initial ramdisk, as my FS is Reiser FS and I included support in the kernel.
