Just out of interest, what kind of things are they for?

A lot of the Linux office stuff (e.g. KSpread, Gnumeric) is somewhat biased
towards the business side of things e.g. lots of statistical functions, but
less in the way of engineering and scientific functions. For real scientific
computation in the past I have used MATLAB (in actual fact Octave, a free
work-a-like), which may be too mathematical for some tastes.
