Well, it's fairly easy. First off, edit /etc/sane.d/dll.conf and uncomment the 
line which reads #plustek. Sometimes it is already done (Mandrake don't 
comment them out, and SuSE do for some reason). This will enable the relevant 
back end.

Then, grab one of the kernel modules from 
http://www.gjaeger.de/scanner/plustek.html and install it. There are 
comprehensive instructions, but it's usually just a case of doing:

make all
make install
make test

and following the extra few instructions in the INSTALL file. The main thing 
is to get a module which is compatible with your version of sane. To find out 
yours, do `scanimage --version` and it will tell you what frontend and 
backend version you are running (usually the same). Make sure that the module 
works with your version of the back end.
