Excuse the HTML post but I'm away from home and I am stck with using webmail. 

I've had odd problems like this and usually have found that creating a blank dos partition table using "fdisk" seems to work OK. I was trying to install SuSE 8.0 on an old laptop last weekend so I used fdisk from Toms rescue disk to write a new parition table and a create a swap partiton in order that I could get SuSE 8 to install.
