There was a slight bug of this sort in Kmail and Debian 3.0 r0 with 
KDE 2.2.  I fixed it by installing KDE 3.0.3 into my laptop.  But, I 
don't think that's your problem.  So that someone else can answer 
this question can you explain which version of Debian and KDE you are 
using ?

BTW, if you do want to upgrade to KDE 3.0.3 put this line into your 
/etc/apt/sources.list  ...

deb  http://people.debian.org/~schoepf/kde3/woody ./

if you are using Woody.  You'll need a broadband net connection to do 
this.
