Doug.
I run xine and have to do a link: (as root)
                 ln -s  /dev/hdd /dev/dvd

Here, /dev/hdd is my dvd drive-----you may have to change it for your 
set up.
Dont forget to enable DMA and also,to read encrypted dvd's,you will need 
libdvdcss.
