[Sheflug] X11 problems post ximian nautilus install

Hiya folks,

I recently installed ximian/ximian desktop/evolution and despite the fact that some old packages were installed and so installation broke at a key point and I later had some odd problems with IMAP mail and the desktop being slightly damaged I was quite happy.

Then I noticed I didn't have a file manager. No problem, I thought, fire up red carpet and get nautilus downloaded and installed automatically. Which I did. I was boasting about it to my daughter Zoe (playing mp3s directly off the directory) when I tried one of the menu options. Graphics didn't update correctly. Couldn't shut down window. So tried to kill it. No luck. Then tried to log off. No luck. So found a console and killed the x session. Tried to log in from new login window. No luck; blank window except for lone mouse pointer. Tried init 3; init 5; no luck. So rebooted. No luck: now X wouldn't even start. Ho hum, run XF86Setup again. No luck, even when I opted to re-create the config file. Now it's looking quite bad: no X11 and no clear way of getting it. Directories missing, errors all over the place. Now just coincidentally the NB fan was making funny noises and it does seem to be running rather hot, but that doesn't really account for why I can run my old installation of suse7.3 from the other hdd, which is what I'm doing now. So either it was a most dramatic and unfortunate collision of bugs in ximian/nautilus or it's an overheating problem with the north bridge that for some reason only causes problems with later software. At any rate, suggestions/comments welcome. I'm trying to rebuild a decent XF86Config file in the hope that it was the thing causing problems, but I am not too hopeful. An X log follows.

Anyone else had similar problems with Ximian/nautilus or is it just me and my usual luck?

Matt.
