Couple of suggestions. Is the underlying (ie empty) /home directory
read-only? I don't know about Linux, but certainly a lot of SVR4 Unices
have the mounted directory 'inherit' the permissions of the underlying
mount point.
Secondly, run tcpdump and look at the NFS traffic between the client and
server to determine whether it's the server generating the error.
