The 'Exiting shell' stuff is being produced by the far end -
ie you log in, then the far end tries to start a PPP session.
Since your end (minicom) doen't respond in kind, the far end drops the
line, and your modem reports 'NO CARRIER'. (At least I'm gusessing that's
why the line is dropped).

IIRC, your PPP config will be stored in a file under /etc/ppp/peer/,
eg the file wvdial.

If you add the following line to this file:

    debug

then there should be logs of debugging output going to whatever file
syslog directs daemon:debug stuff to (most likely /var/log/messages)
- although you may need to reconfigure syslog to enable the logging
output.

[ disclaimers - I've never used RH 8.0, and its been a while since I used
dialup - hurrah for ADSL ]
