I think I can say that progress is being made in this area :) On the
AFFS/FSFE-UK (www.affs.org.uk :) list, we seem to be discussing this
topic at the moment.
http://www.ofset.org/ have a CD system called 'Freeduc' that is based on
the highly thought of Knoppix live CD distribution. The idea is that
it's a version of Knoppix/Debian, but with educational and (I think.. )
Debian-Junior software installed. It does everything from Tux Paint
(good for kids of 4) to TeXmacs and differential calculus (probably
nearer the A* GCSE/A-level standard :).
I haven't used it myself, but people on that list have said that it's
pretty rocking. Also, it's based on Knoppix, which is renowed for being
fairly excellent. And of course the best thing is that it doesn't
require installation - it runs off the CD, so support requirements are
much lower (if it breaks, you can just stop using it..)
Cheers,
Alex.
