[Sheflug] debian network problem

hi,
I got a minimum image for debian 3 off the debian site. debian seemed to intall fine, except when it came to network cards. I have a 3com 3c509b.

I know this card is working fine, as I had windows installed on the box prior to debian, and it was working.

During install, I selected the card 3c509 from the list. Then a couple of screens later there was a question about dhcp... this didnt go too well. It couldnt find the dhcp server (which happens to be an ipcop box). I know the dhcp server is fine, as i have a few windows boxes connected, and it works fine for these. So, after unsuccesfully trying to get dhcp working, i gave it an address manually (192.168.64.20 - the server address is 192.168.64.1).

When debian was trying to locate ftp servers in the uk so the rest of debian would install, i got the report "something wicked happened".

I think that the network card is not installed correctly, but after hours and hours of reading, and playing, I still dont have a clue how to re-install the card, or how to fix this problem.

Any clues?

thanks,
damian.
