[Sheflug] Mandrake 9.1 (non-beta!)

I've done a complete re-install of Mandrake 9.1 on my laptop, and sadly, this
hasn't, so far, cured any problems :-(

On the good side, KDE is better organised than on the beta release, although
I still find myself drawn to Gnome. The installation is generally better
organised (although there are still some ambiguities to trap the unfamiliar).

I have managed to establish a network connection to my other computers
(woohoo!), which should help with future 'tweaking' :-)

Still problematic:

Serious:
=======

There is still a 'trace' created on boot-up (something to do with 'apm',
according to the log, and ending with the phrase "Bad EIP value"), suggesting
something is very unhappy - but I don't know what. I have managed to keep a
copy of the log for reference.

Sound works in Gnome, but not in KDE! :-/ Wierd!!

The login box no longer has an entry for 'root' (or any box in which I can
type 'root'), and trying to modify users in the Mandrake Control Center
produces an error:
"Cannot lock user lib, file /etc/ptmp or /etc/gtmp exist"
- which of course is very helpful ;-) (This bit works fine in Mandrake 8.2)
Fortunately, I'm becoming a /little/ less terrified of the CLI, but I'd still
prefer to set configurations via a GUI!

Niggles:
=======

Still get a completly stubborn floppy-icon on the desktop which cannot be
removed!

Double-clicking an HTML file (in Gnome) opens the file into OpenOffice!!! -
Surely opening into a web-browser would be more logical - or failing that,
opening into an HTML editor :-/ Wierd!! - I've now found how to change the
default action, but still can't understand the logic behind the default :-/

So, if anyone can suggest cures for any/all of the above problems, I'm not
above paying in beer :-)

Cheers!
